Birthday Morning in the Garden

This morning, I woke up one year older—but what a beautiful way to begin the day. As the sun rose over our little homestead, casting golden light across the yard, I was greeted by the comforting scent of fresh coffee—my amazing husband Zach had it waiting for me. That first warm sip was the perfect start to a day already filled with so much love.

With newborn River wrapped snugly against my chest, I stepped outside to greet the garden. Luna, our ever-loyal Weimaraner, was already waiting at the door, eager to lead the way. She padded ahead confidently, glancing back every few steps to check on us, her energy calm but watchful.

My 5-year-old nephew JT joined soon after, ready to help with the “big plants.” Together, we wandered through the gardens—me with River nestled close, Luna circling us, and JT proudly pointing out all his favorite spots.

The herbs are overflowing this time of year—dill, basil, sage, parsley, pineapple sage, mint, thyme, purple basil, rosemary, lavender, and stevia. The aroma was intoxicating, every step filled with earthy, vibrant scent. The garden is a jungle of abundance: tomato vines curling upward, peppers and cucumbers hiding beneath broad leaves, beans twisting up their supports, and our pumpkin patch thriving. Zucchini, eggplant, and clusters of cherry and grape tomatoes ripen like treasures waiting to be found.

And the flowers—oh, the flowers. Marigolds, zinnias, sunflowers, and wild blooms of every color danced in the breeze. It felt like the whole garden was alive with celebration.

After our slow and joyful walk, we came back inside, where the warmth only continued. My mom was already in the kitchen, holding baby River while she whipped up a breakfast that felt like a true gift from the heart. Dancing along to her playlist, River's favorite thing to do. She made fluffy rosemary cheddar scones using herbs from the garden, golden puffy omelets, and even baked me a birthday cake.

Everyone had somethings to do which left just my mom, baby River, and me.

River dozed peacefully in his bassinet as my mom and I sat on the deck, sipping coffee and savoring our breakfast together, overlooking the vibrant backyard we’ve all nurtured with love. The breeze was soft, the sun kind, and in that moment—surrounded by my mom, my baby boy, and the beauty of our garden—I felt completely, deeply content.

Here’s to another year of growing, blooming, and loving every inch of this wild, magical life.
